[ad_1] Heavy power transmission towers can be seen in this picture. — AFP/FileLAHORE: Caretaker Federal Energy Minister Mohammad Ali has said the government is committed to eradicating corruption in the power sector. He said that in last two weeks, power theft worth Rs6 billion had been detected and action was taken against culprits.Accompanied by Caretaker Federal Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Production Gohar Ejaz, he discussed pressing economic matters during meetings at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and All Pakistan Textile Mills Associations (APTMA).He addressed the issue of gas pricing, stating that changes would be announced soon but emphasised the need for gradual adjustments under the IMF programme.Muhammad Ali noted that the price of gas varied between regions, with the North having higher prices than the South. He mentioned the insufficiency of long-term LNG contracts and ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft. He also hinted at gas tariff increase in next two weeks.Textile leaders plead their case with the energy minister, who acknowledged their problems. However, he explained that things would improve gradually. Government’s hands were not only tied by the IMF but also by the lack of resources. He said the prices of gas would have to be increased to save distribution companies from loss. He said a formula was being worked out under which the lifeline consumers would be charged at a fixed rate of Rs500 per month. For other users, he added, tariff would increase sharply. The largest users will be charged at the price of LPG. He said for the industrial sector, there was a sharp difference in gas tariff between South and North. He said modalities were being developed to bridge that gap. However, he clarified that average unified gas tariff was not possible as under the constitution, North that produces gas had the right of its first use. Though the government had the right to fix gas tariffs, the huge difference between two regions could not be reduced appreciably. Regarding power, he said the situation was complex and could not be addressed immediately. He said NEPRA was asking for Rs28 as wheeling charges, which was unrealistic and the private sector producing power away from their production lines could not afford to wheel their electricity. He said the problem was being sorted out.Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Production Gohar Ejaz emphasised that concrete measures were being taken regarding Afghan Transit Trade (ATT). Only essential goods would be allowed under the ATT to curb dollar flight and smuggling. Gohar Ejaz pointed out that the exchange rate had soared from Rs160 to over Rs300 in the past year, with the Afghan transit trade contributing significantly to this increase. The minister highlighted that industry inputs, raw materials, and energy prices were influenced by international markets, making exports vulnerable to currency devaluation. However, recent efforts to control the exchange rate had yielded positive results. He told textile players that synthetic textile products worth $3.5 billion were entering Pakistan through ATT, which had been stopped and it would boost the local textile industry. He said this year the exports would increase by $10 billion to $37 billion, against the official target of $32 billion. He said that was doable and he had chalked out a plan in that regard. He expected the textile sector would add $75 billion and the non-textile sector $2.5 billion. He said before leaving his office, he would submit a comprehensive plan to increase exports to $100 billion out of which $50 billion would come from textiles only. [ad_2]

One of the key aspirations of the Pasmanda movement has been to contest the emotive politics of symbols that have been fostered by the Muslim caste elite – the issues surrounding Urdu, the Uniform Civil Code, Aligarh Muslim University and the Babri Masjid itself – and instead to concentrate on more organic, development-based issues facing the community. Along these lines, a few years back another leader of Dalit Muslims, Ejaz Ali, offered a provocative though arguably simplistic slogan: “Babri masjid le lo, article 341 de do” (Take Babri Mosque, give us Article 341). Notably, the movement around Article 341 presses for the scrapping of the Presidential Order of 1951 that ejected the non-Hindu Scheduled Caste segments from the Scheduled Caste list, thus depriving them of the benefits of affirmative action. Ali Anwar has echoed unequivocal similar sentiments. “Our main concern is to raise the issue of economic deprivation and unemployment among the Muslims,” he has said, “and we want to take the community away from the fold of mosques and mullahs.”

A powerful bomb exploded inside a Shiite Muslim mosque in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar on Friday, killing at least 56 people and wounding 194 others, according to a hospital official.
Peshawar Police Chief Muhammed Ejaz Khan said the violence started when two armed attackers opened fire on police outside the mosque in Peshawar’s old city. One attacker and one policeman were killed in the gunfight, and another police official was wounded. The remaining attacker then ran inside the mosque and detonated a bomb.
Local police official Waheed Khan said the explosion occurred as worshippers had gathered in the Kucha Risaldar mosque for Friday prayers.
Ambulances rushed through congested narrow streets carrying the wounded to Lady Reading Hospital, where doctors worked feverishly.
The attack came on the first day of a cricket test match in Rawalpindi – around 190 kilometres (120 miles) to the east – between Pakistan and Australia, who haven't toured Pakistan in nearly a quarter of a century because of security concerns.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, but both the Islamic State (IS) group and the Pakistani Taliban have carried out similar attacks in the region, located near the border with neighbouring Afghanistan.
'Dust and bodies everywhere'
Shayan Haider, a witness, had been preparing to enter the mosque when a powerful explosion threw him to the street.
“I opened my eyes and there was dust and bodies everywhere,” he said.
At the Lady Reading Hospital emergency department, there was chaos as doctors struggled to move the many wounded into operating theatres. Hundreds of relatives gathered outside the emergency department, many of them wailing and beating their chests, pleading for information about their loved ones.
Outside the mosque, Shiite Muslims pressed through the cordoned-off streets. The Kucha Risaldar mosque is one of the oldest in the area, predating the creation of Pakistan in 1947 as a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent.
The prayer leader, Allama Irshad Hussein Khalil, a prominent young Shiite leader, was among the dead. Throughout the city, ambulance sirens could be heard.
Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the bombing.
'Aren't we citizens?'
Retired army officer Sher Ali who had been inside the mosque at the time of the explosion was injured by flying shrapnel. He made a impassioned plea to the Pakistani government for better protection of the country's minority Shiite Muslims.
“What is our sin? What have we done? Aren't we citizens of this country?” he said from within the emergency department, his white clothes splattered with blood.
In majority Sunni Muslim Pakistan, minority Shiite Muslims have come under repeated attacks.
In recent months Pakistan has experienced a broad increase of violence. Dozens of military personnel have been killed in scores of attacks on army outposts along the border with Afghanistan. Much has been claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, which analysts say have been emboldened by the Afghan Taliban's return to power last August.
Pakistan has urged Afghanistan's new rulers to hand over Pakistani Taliban insurgents who have been staging their attacks from Afghanistan. Afghanistan's Taliban say their territory will not be used to stage attacks against anyone, but until now they have not handed over any Pakistani insurgents.

[ad_1] Information Technology expert Umar Saif and journalist Murtaza Solangi were among the names added to the caretaker cabinet. They are likely to be given ministries of IT and information respectively. Apart from this, Shamshad Akhtar, Waqar Masood, Ahad Cheema, Tabish Gohar, Ejaz Gohar, Sarfraz Bugti, Muhammad Ali, Aniq Ahmed, Sultan Allana, and Jalil Abbas Jilani’s names were under consideration for different ministries in the interim cabinet. The interim cabinet of Anwaarul Haq Kakar is scheduled to take oath on Thursday (today) at 5pm at the President’s House in Islamabad, according to media sources. Meanwhile, discussions were under way for the final list of the interim cabinet. Kakar was sworn in as the 8th caretaker prime minister on August 14 to see the country through to an election due in months. Many experts have expressed their concerns over timely elections in the country, despite claims of the former ministers. They think the Council of Common Interests decision to notify the digital census results has increased the likelihood of not having elections due this year. Earlier this month, former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed to Aaj News that elections would be held under the latest census results. Raja Riaz, former opposition leader in National Assembly, has claimed that “elders” have decided that elections would be held in February 2024. “Elections will be held a week before or after February 15, 2024,” he said in an interview with private news channel on August 15. “I am giving you this breaking news. I will be responsible if there is any shortcoming.” [ad_2]
